The cultural and business center of Kauai, this small city is part sugar town, part shipping center, and -- as the island's main port of entry -- part tourist magnet. The Kauai Museum presents an excellent overview of the island's culture and history. Nearby, you can visit the Grove Farm Homestead, a remarkably well-preserved early sugar plantation. Tours are by appointment only. Also of interest is the manor house at Kilohana Plantation, built in the English-Tudor style in 1935.
Nawiliwili Bay mixes exceptional natural beauty with the meaner necessities of the shipping industry. Kalapaki Beach is a fine spot for swimming and surfing. North of Lihue, across seemingly endless miles of sugar cane, you'll find Wailua Falls plunging 80 feet over a cliff and into a sparkling pool below.
