Rome is located at the geographical center of New York State. It is 250 driving miles from New York City, miles filled with scenery of mountains, forests and farm lands. A city of approximately 45,000 people and 72 square miles, Rome, until recently, had the distinction of being the largest city in area in the United States.
The Rome area offers opportunities for outdoor entertainment during every season of the year. Here you will find spring flowers and gardening, summer outdoor recreation, fall foliage and winter skiing.Camping, hiking, hunting and fishing can be found as close as Delta Lake State Park, five miles north of Rome. Here, swimming, picnicking, boating, biking and cross-country skiing are close enough to enjoy at the end of a hard day at work.The Adirondack Park, northeast of Rome, with over 6 million acres, has more than 1000 large lakes and ponds, and 46 mountains over 4000 feet, including Mount Marcy, the highest at 5,344 feet. The Park, contains many facilities for campers and hikers within an hour's drive of Rome.Wood's Valley, a family ski area is located across the road from Delta Lake State Park. It offers 11 trails of varying difficulties.
Rome calls itself the City of American History and is proud of the important role it has played since the Iroquois used De-O-Wain-Sta, the Great Carry. Located in current downtown Rome, it was used to portage canoes one mile from the Mohawk River, which flows east to the Atlantic Ocean, to Wood Creek, which flows north to the Great Lakes.
